PERFORMANCE/READINGS

Warren Lehrer and Dennis J Bernstein will present live performance/readings of Five Oceans in a Teaspoon at book launches (in New York and the Bay Area), exhibition openings, book fairs and festivals, conferences, bookstores, galleries, art and literary centers, and universities. Most presentations will incorporate projection of pages and animations  with live readings/performances of select poems from each of the eight movements interspersed with recollections and behind the scenes stories. When Bernstein and Lehrer are together, they’ll discuss their collaboration and friendship. Since they live on opposite coasts, they will sometimes present separately. Alone or together, their presentations will be performative and lively events that can be presented in venues with low or no tech to well-equipped theaters. Special presentations—especially those connected to community, art or literary centers, university visits or residencies—can involve more reader/performers including students, actors, musicians, dancers, community members of different backgrounds, ages and skills.

Described as a pioneer of “performance typography,” known for reading/performance tours connected to his books and multimedia projects, Lehrer presented his A Life In Books project at over 50 venues throughout the U.S. and Canada beginning as the keynote speaker at the Contemporary Artists’ Book Conference at the NY Art Book Fair in 2013. Most widely known as a radio personality and broadcast journalist, Bernstein brings his skills as a raconteur/public speaker to his poetry readings, which are intimate, funny, heartfelt events. TRAVELING EXHIBITION

The Five Oceans in a Teaspoon exhibit will feature selected poems from each of the eight movements in the project, including archival inkjet prints and animations and copies of the book. The exhibit premieres at the City Lore Gallery on East 1st Street, Lower East Side, NYC. Programming will include performance/readings by Bernstein, Lehrer, and others. Like many projects City Lore has championed and featured over the years, Five Oceans in a Teaspoon straddles a number of lines: between journalism and poetry, writing, visual art and performance.

The premiere exhibit at City Lore—September 19 – November 23, 2019—coincides with the launch of the book. The exhibit is available to travel and can serve as a companion to using the Five Oceans in a Teaspoon book as a text and learning tool, and is a good example of writing fused organically with design, typography, book arts, animation, new media. Warren Lehrer and Judith Sloan’s Crossing the BLVD exhibition connected to that book/project worked in a similar way, to great effect, and traveled to 15 locations including museums, galleries and universities throughout the U.S. The scale of the Five Oceans in a Teaspoon exhibit is flexible depending on the scale of the venue.
